At least seven people were killed and 113 injured when Hindus and Muslims clashed in a crowded market Friday over a language dispute.

Police opened fire twice after failing to stop the fighting in Bangalore with nightsticks and tear gas. Four people were killed by police gunfire and three by stabbing, said Sharad Chandra Burman, a senior police official in Karnataka state.

Rioting began after Muslims inside a mosque threw stones at Hindus marching through the marketplace to protest new Urdu-language broadcasts on state television.

Hindu activists have protested daily since the 10-minute newscasts in Urdu, the language of India’s Muslim minority, started on Sunday.
