THE GOVERNOR’S RACE

* What Happened Friday: Democrat Kathleen Brown unexpectedly agreed to a gubernatorial debate with Republican foe Pete Wilson in Sacramento on Oct. 14. Brown held a news conference at the Pacific Stock Exchange to promote her 62-page economic plan and then went to Berkeley for a rally with economists supporting her program. Gov. Wilson returned to Sacramento from an Eastern fund-raising trip, but no public events were held.

* What’s Ahead: Brown addresses Children NOW conference at the Los Angeles Downtown Public Library and a rally at her campaign office in El Monte. Wilson planned to attend a Burbank fund-raising house party, one of several being held around the state.

THE SENATE RACE

* What Happened Friday: Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Mike Huffington remained in Washington for windup sessions of Congress.

* What’s Ahead: Feinstein and Huffington planned to fly from Washington to California today. Both have active campaign schedules beginning Monday.
