Troops Likely to Remain in Haiti Until at Least December, Shalikashvili Says
U.S. defense officials said Saturday that American forces will probably stay in Haiti for at least two more months.
Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the United States is unlikely to hand over its mission to U.N. peacekeepers until after legislative elections scheduled for December. “I don’t think we should look for that (hand-over) certainly not until after the parliamentary election,” Shalikashvili said at a news conference at the international airport here. He was on a one-day visit with Defense Secretary William J. Perry.
In Washington, White House Chief of Staff Leon E. Panetta said no deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops has been set within the Clinton Administration.
