OAK PARK : Jews Seek Permit for Home Worship

Share

Members of Chabad of Conejo, an orthodox Jewish group, will ask the Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to grant them a permit to hold services at a house in Oak Park.

The Chabad is bringing its appeal to the board after the county Planning Commission denied the request for a conditional use permit at its Sept. 8 meeting. The vote was 2 to 1 in favor, but three votes were required for approval. Staff planners had recommended approval.

The Chabad asks that the group be allowed to hold services for up to 70 people in a house in a residential area three times a week and to have Bible study classes at night.

The request has created tension between the Chabad and its Oak Park neighbors, who say it violates the residential nature of the area. The neighbors have complained about parking, noise and a lack of privacy.

The supervisors will consider the appeal at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, when they meet at the County Government Center, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura.
