Cervical Cancer Screening Test: Upjohn Co. will begin distributing a new visual cervical cancer screening test Wednesday that was developed by Trylon Corp., a Torrance-based medical products company. The procedure, being marketed as Pap Plus Speculoscopy, is designed to be used in conjunction with the Pap smear laboratory test, which is used for early detection of cervical cancer. According to Trylon, its new procedure will provide immediate results in the doctor’s office. It uses a blue-white light capsule, or Speculite, attached to a speculum to illuminate the cervical area, the company said. When the cervix is viewed under 4-6X magnification, abnormal areas show up as white while normal tissue remains dark, Trylon said. The company said the procedure, developed in 1986, has been tested on 10,000 women in four countries. Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Upjohn acquired primary distribution rights from Trylon.
