IBM to Consolidate PC Lines: Moving to reduce consumers’ confusion about its products and regain lost market share, the company said it will reduce the number of product lines to four from nine. But Richard Thoman, the senior vice president who heads the PC Co. division, said International Business Machines Corp. will not see the benefits of its new strategy and its recent restructuring announced in July until mid-1995. The new brand names are IBM PC, for business computers; IBM PC Server, for machines connected on local area networks; ThinkPad, for portable computers, and Aptiva, for its personal computers targeted at home and family users.
