LONG BEACH : Skaters May Be Banned From Downtown Sites

Share

City officials may put the brakes on roller skaters and skateboarders who whiz through certain downtown landmarks.

The Long Beach Convention Center, Civic Center Plaza, Lincoln Park and The Promenade, a downtown walkway next to Pine Avenue, are among the sites where skating would be prohibited under an ordinance being prepared by city attorneys.

The proposed ban, expected to go before the City Council in about two weeks, would extend to bicycle riding at the park and Civic Center.

Richard I. Backus, city traffic engineer, said minor damage caused by skaters at the newly remodeled convention center and concern for pedestrian safety prompted the proposed ban.
