The Low Cost of Pep in the Mid ‘40s

“The Price of Pep” (Oct. 6) reminded me of my days as head song leader at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach in the mid ‘40s.

In that era, our mothers made our outfits from heavy white cotton--with high necks, long sleeves, and skirts to the knee.

We wore a crimson and gold letterman’s “W” on our chests and white shoes with bobby socks. Our pompons were constructed of cut-off broom handles with red and yellow crepe-paper twists.

How modest (and inexpensive) our costumes were in those days.
