Heartless Efforts to Repeal Citizenship Clause

Share

I want to congratulate Ron Tasoff for his thoughtful and powerful analysis (Oct. 16) of the efforts of Congressman Anthony Beilenson and challenger Richard Sybert in the 24th Congressional District to repeal the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.

I find the efforts of our congressman and his challenger cruel, heartless and contrary to the essence of our democracy. Just the historic entry of the citizenship clause after the Civil War to ensure citizenship to the former slaves should stand to preserve the sanctity of the cherished right of all the American-born to have American citizenship.

Can you imagine what racial/ethnic divisiveness and hatred such a proposed constitutional amendment to deprive citizenship to the American-born or illegal immigrants would cause in this country?

Why? Why, when such an initiative would have little impact on illegal entry? Could these positions be “good politics,” as Ron Tasoff proposes? If so, then I agree, Mr. Tasoff. Shame, shame!
