ORANGE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES : High School Districts

Voters will choose from among 16 candidates running for school board seats in two high school districts. In Huntington Beach, the district is facing declining enrollment. In Anaheim, the student enrollment is increasing.

ANAHEIM UNION

Boundaries: Serves Anaheim and parts of Cypress, La Palma, Stanton and Buena Park.

Enrollment: 25,000; grades 7-12

Facilities: Eight high schools, eight junior high schools, three continuation schools, one school for the “trainable mentally retarded” and three alternative learning centers

Issues: District experienced an influx of 2,000 new students this year. Community activists may again seek to prohibit use of the books “Ordinary People” and “The Great Santini.”

* Treva Brown

Age: 55

Occupation: Homemaker

Qualifications: Former teacher; spearheaded efforts to remove “The Great Santini” and “Ordinary People” from classrooms.

* Barbara J. Clendineng

Age: 46

Occupation: Served on Magnolia School District Board of Education from 1988 to 1994

Qualifications: Works as Girl Scout leader; member of local PTA.

* R.A. (Molly) McGee*

Age: 40

Occupation: Writer and educator

Qualifications: Served on board from 1973 to 1983 and since 1990.

* Harald G. Martin

Age: 39

Occupation: Anaheim police officer

Qualifications: Holds master’s degree in public administration from Cal State Fullerton.

* Joanne L. Stanton*

Age: 65

Occupation: Community volunteer

Qualifications: Served on board since 1979.

* L.E. (Slim) Terrell

Age: 66

Occupation: Retired school administrator

Qualifications: Worked for 34 years as a principal and administrator in the district.

* Beverly J. Yourstone*

Age: 51

Occupation: Health educator

Qualifications: Served on board since 1990.

* Mary Anne Zimolzak

Age: 50

Occupation: Homemaker

Qualifications: Member of local PTA and school Booster Club.

HUNTINGTON BEACH UNION

Boundaries: Serves Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Westminster.

Enrollment: 13,300; grades 9-12

Facilities: Six high schools, one continuation high school and one adult school

Issues: Conservative three-candidate slate--Joseph J. Wagner, Leon E. McKinney and James Ball--accuses teachers union of controlling the board. Bonnie Castrey, the only incumbent seeking reelection, says charge is baseless and comes from “extremists.” Declining enrollment has caused budget cuts.

Qualifications: Served on district’s Strategic Planning Action Team and Ocean View School District’s Budget Advisory Committee.

Occupation: Mediator-arbitrator and teacher

Qualifications: Served on board since 1985; former president of Orange County School Boards Assn.; board member of the Huntington Youth Shelter.

* Barbara Johnson

Age: 38

Occupation: Community and school volunteer

Qualifications: Served on five-district Special Education Advisory Committee; site council member for Masuda School; youth soccer coach.

* Curt Jones

Age: 46

Occupation: College instructor and business owner

Qualifications: Served on Westminster school board from 1981 to 1987; former chairman of the City of Westminster Merit Commission.

Qualifications: Served on district’s Strategic Action Planning Team; member of Huntington Beach Citizens Bureau of Investigation.

Occupation: Air transport pilot

Qualifications: Supports Boy Scouts, youth soccer and Little League.

* Joseph J. Wagner

Age: 44

Occupation: Aerospace engineer

Qualifications: Served on district’s Strategic Action Planning Team; worked with Orange County Youth Motivational Task Force.
