6 days to go before Californians go to the polls

THE GOVERNOR’S RACE

* What Happened Tuesday: Democrat Kathleen Brown held a rally in San Bernardino, where she was accompanied by Vice President Al Gore, and then made stops in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria and Oxnard. She blasted Gov. Pete Wilson as a bully for his support of Proposition 187, the anti-illegal immigration initiative. Wilson held a “law enforcement bus tour” with stops in Riverside, Los Angeles, Garden Grove and San Diego, where he hammered Brown as a “no-show” on past efforts to strengthen criminal penalties.

* What’s Ahead: Brown was scheduled to set off on a 29-hour bus and plane tour of California that will take her from Sacramento south to San Diego, then north through the Central Valley and into San Francisco. Wilson was to tape a public affairs television show in San Francisco, then speak to Asian American leaders in the city’s Chinatown district. While there, he also planned to telephone voters on behalf of the state Republican ticket.

THE SENATE RACE

* What Happened Tuesday: GOP candidate Mike Huffington held a rally in Victorville to protest the desert protection bill signed into law Monday by President Clinton and pushed through Congress by Huffington’s Democratic opponent, Dianne Feinstein. Feinstein received the endorsements of Los Angeles city officials at City Hall.

NOTABLE QUOTES

“I was shocked to read that you have refused to tell the people of California how you would implement Proposition 187 until after the election. Not only is this cowardly, it is irresponsible.”

--Kathleen Brown, in a letter sent to Pete Wilson

“To accuse people of cowardice is simply name-calling.”

--Wilson, in a spoken response
