Two men arrested for the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old California boy may have mistaken the family’s car for one transporting jewels, news reports said Wednesday.

An anonymous source told police he had revealed to one of the suspects that a car similar to the one rented by the parents of Nicholas Green regularly carried jewels to stores in the area where he was shot, the reports said.

The suspects were arrested Tuesday. The Italian news agency ANSA identified them as Michele Iannello, 26, and Francesco Mesiano, 21, both of Vibo Valentia.

The Greens were driving through Calabria on the way to Sicily when robbers fired at their car Sept. 29. Nicholas, asleep in the back seat, was struck in the head.
