Clinton Aide Gergen Tenders Resignation
David Gergen, a political strategist and speech writer who worked for three Republican presidents before joining the Clinton White House last year, has submitted his resignation, effective Jan. 1, the White House said Friday.
Gergen was hired last May to help bring order to an often chaotic White House, with the title of counselor to the President. In a later White House staff shake-up, Gergen was transferred to the State Department--where he served as foreign policy adviser to both President Clinton and Secretary of State Warren Christopher.
Gergen had said previously he intended to resign after this year’s midterm elections. He plans to teach at Duke University.
