3 days to go before Californians go to the polls

THE GOVERNOR’S RACE

* What Happened Friday: Democrat Kathleen Brown appeared at a rally in Downtown Los Angeles with President Clinton and continued to campaign against Proposition 187 in appearances in San Diego and Sacramento. Republican Gov. Pete Wilson reopened the last segment of freeway damaged in the January Northridge earthquake and joined others on the GOP ticket at a rally in Sacramento to kick off a weekend campaign tour of the state.

* What’s Ahead: Brown attends a rally in Pomona, then flies to Oakland for an afternoon rally with Clinton, then a rally at Democratic headquarters in San Jose. Wilson, traveling with others on the state GOP ticket, plans to speak in Chico, Stockton, Fresno and Bakersfield.

THE SENATE RACE

* What Happened Friday: The campaigns of Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Republican Rep. Mike Huffington continued to exchange bitter charges about the hiring of illegal immigrants. Feinstein received the endorsements of mayors, police chiefs and other local officials in Sacramento, Fresno and attended a rally with Clinton in Los Angeles.

* What’s Ahead: Huffington will address rallies in Palm Springs and Bakersfield. Feinstein planned to address a rally in Santa Monica with a possible afternoon appearance in Northern California.
