COLLEGE ROUNDUP : USC’s Hansen Advances to Regional Tennis Final

USC’s Brett Hansen, formerly of UC Irvine and Newport Harbor High, beat top-seeded Robert Janecek of UCLA to advance to the final of the ITA Southern California Men’s Tennis Regional on Saturday at UCI.
Hansen won, 6-3, 7-6, and will face Roger Pettersson of Nevada Las Vegas at 10:30 a.m. today. Pettersson beat Irvine’s Marc-Andre Tardif, 7-6, 6-1, in Saturday’s other semifinal.
Tardif also lost in doubles. He and Chris Tontz fell to Simon Aspelin and Troy Budgen of Pepperdine, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Aspelin and Budgen will play Chris Hill and Mike Jessup, also of Pepperdine, in today’s final at noon.
In men’s exhibition basketball:
Long Beach State 102, High Five America 94--Long Beach State managed the victory despite committing 35 turnovers in front of 1,557 at The Gold Mine.
Sophomore guard James Cotton scored a team-high 18 points and forward Jeff Clifton had 35 for High Five America. Cotton also had seven rebounds for the 49ers, who led by as many as 18 points (37-19) in the first half and were ahead, 48-36, at halftime.
High Five America Coach Rle Nichols was ejected with 4:07 to play after receiving his second technical. High Five America guard Rod Hannibal, who completed his eligibility at Long Beach last season, was ejected with 1:12 remaining after he pushed junior center Brian Yankelevitz. Hannibal scored 14 points.
