Richard Krautheimer; Historian of Christian, Byzantine Art

Richard Krautheimer, 97, an art historian known for his works on early Christian and Byzantine art. Krautheimer was a professor of art history at New York University and professor emeritus at the Hertziana Library in Rome. The German-born scholar moved to Rome when he retired after World War II. He continued studying and researching at the library there and also in New York. Krautheimer was best known for his work “Corpus Basilicarum Cristianarum Romae,” a five-volume work on all the early Christian basilicas of Rome. Another book, “Profile of a City: 312-1308,” recounts the history of Rome from the time of Emperor Constantine to the transfer of the papacy to Avignon, France. In Rome on Tuesday.
