Narita Brian surged into the lead at the head of the stretch and went on to a seven-length victory in the $2.1-million Kikka-sho on Sunday, making him the first winner of Japan’s Triple Crown in a decade.

The 3-year-old colt, a son of 1988 Florida Derby winner Brian’s Time, was the odds-on favorite and set a race record on the wet grass with a clocking of 3 minutes, 4.6 seconds for the 1 7/8 miles at Kyoto Racecourse.

Narita Brian became the fifth Triple Crown winner in Japan, joining St. Lite (1941), Shinzan (1964 ), Mr. C.B. (1983) and Symboli Rudolph (1984).

Narita Brian won the first two races in the series--1 1/4-mile Satsuki-sho in April and the 1 1/2-mile Japan Derby in May.
