NORTH HOLLYWOOD : Buffet to Raise Funds to Send Kids to Camp

Share

A pre-Thanksgiving Day family buffet will be held by the East Valley Coordinating Council to raise money to send needy youngsters to summer camp.

The buffet will be held at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 15 at the First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, 4832 Tujunga Ave. The suggested donation is $5. Between 40 and 50 people can be accommodated at the buffet, which includes a turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

“We’re hoping to raise as much money as possible,” said Albert Sulprizio, vice president in charge of programs for the coordinating council. “All our money goes to help send kids to camp. We help anyone who is recommended to us, basically, kids who can benefit from it the most.” The coordinating council has sent 40 to 50 kids to summer camp each year for the past 10 years.

The featured speaker at the buffet will be Suzanne Johnson, project coordinator of the High School Magnet Program in Electronic Information. The magnet program is a partnership between the Los Angeles Public Library and the Los Angeles Unified School District, with participation of students, faculty and librarians from the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.

In addition, Judith Tetove, senior librarian at the Sun Valley Branch Library, will speak about the status of Internet access through library computers, and homework computer centers coming to branch libraries in the Valley.

The homework computer centers are computers outfitted with word-processing software and educational computer games children can use. “Eventually, every branch library in the Valley will have four homework computer centers for public use,” Tetove said.

The computers can be used between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. by children only.

Tetove will also speak about the new computerized circulation/catalogue system, which will completely replace the old card catalogue library system.
