CalPERS to Invest in Small Companies: The $80-billion California Public Employees Retirement System plans to invest $45 million in small Southern California companies to help boost the state’s struggling economy. This is the third investment commitment this year to the fund’s in-state program designed to preserve and create jobs. “This investment represents yet another unique vehicle to assist in the rejuvenation of the California economy while maintaining the highest standards of investment prudence,” said Charles Valdes, chair of the investment committee for CalPERS. Investments will be made through Kline Hawkes California, with CalPERS as the sole limited partner.
