Two Border Patrol agents remained hospitalized Tuesday in serious but stable condition after suffering severe head injuries when a suspected drug smuggler crashed his pickup truck across the border into Mexico on Monday night.

The alleged smuggler first rammed a Border Patrol vehicle, injuring the agent inside. He then crashed his pickup through a border gate, which swung wildly and struck a second agent standing nearby, said Border Patrol spokeswoman Ann Summers.

The agents, whose names were not released, were in intensive care Tuesday at Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The agent in the four-wheel-drive vehicle suffered head and neck injuries, and the other agent suffered a concussion, a fractured neck and a gash on his head that required 70 stitches, Summers said.
