Gruesome color photographs published Tuesday in Canada’s biggest newspapers showed how a Somali teen-ager was tied up, tortured and beaten to death by Canadian soldiers on a United Nations peacekeeping mission last year.

The “trophy pictures,” taken by one of seven soldiers charged in the death, were published the day after Pvt. David Brocklebank, 26, was acquitted by a five-member military panel. Evidence showed Brocklebank never touched the prisoner but was present when he was beaten with a wooden riot baton, a metal pipe, fists and feet.

Shidane Arone, 16, who was captured trying to sneak into a compound adjacent to the Canadian camp, died in custody March 16, 1993.

Two other soldiers have been convicted in the case.
