CLUB REVIEW : Glam Rock Rears Its Glittery Head in West Hollywood

Share

L.A.’s always changing club world operates like a litmus test for hip.

No sooner than disco has taken a back seat to punk all through Hollywood clubs, the new Cherry club is reviving glam rock. Cherry, which takes place at West Hollywood’s Love Lounge every Friday, is a suitable venue for the glameroo musings of “Ziggy Stardust” era David Bowie and Gary Glitter. The lush, spacious room features a dance floor smack in the center of the club, which can lead to an irresistible urge to ham it up.

The club’s best feature is a record mix just alternative enough and just mainstream enough to appeal to virtually all tastes. Deejay Mike Messex, a marvel on the local club scene for his ability to always keep one step ahead of the trends, mixes in glam’s old school without ignoring the contemporary. Thus, you’re as likely to be enticed onto the dance floor by T. Rex as by the latest from Luscious Jackson.

So far, the 3-week-old club, which will offer a live performance by Extra Fancy this Friday, isn’t wearing its hipness factor on its sleeve. Although last week found Perry Farrell singing and pogoing his way around the dance floor to his old “Been Caught Stealing,” no one gawked. They simply joined him.
