Bank to Cut Back on Branches: PNC Bank Corp. said it may eliminate nearly a third of its 611 branch offices over the next few years and replace them with enhanced ATM and telephone banking services. Spokesman Jonathan Williams said the company will consolidate its telephone banking services in a new center in Pittsburgh next year. PNC has closed or consolidated 100 branches since 1991, though the overall branch network has grown through acquisitions. Besides Pittsburgh, PNC operates in Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Louisville, Ky., and other markets.
