FTC Files Cyberspace Ad Complaint: Federal consumer protection authorities blazed a trail onto the information superhighway with the Federal Trade Commission for the first time targeting deceptive advertising on a computer network. The agency said it reached a settlement with a California man accused of posting messages on America Online’s computer service that offered misleading promises to help financially troubled consumers create new credit histories. “We want to make it clear that advertising on the information superhighway is going to be held to the same standards as advertising in other media,” FTC Chairman Janet D. Steiger said. “If it’s unfair or deceptive in a magazine or newspaper, it’s unfair or deceptive in cyberspace.”
