Computer Firms Join to Standardize Data Transfer: International Business Machines, AT&T;, Apple Computer and Siemens said they will announce a plan next Wednesday to create a universal communication language for computers and computer networks. The agreement will standardize the way computers talk to each other and erase the difficulties in communicating between a portable notebook computer, for example, and an office network of personal computers. Analysts said it is hard to say how significant or successful the four companies will be in their endeavor, especially given the absence of Microsoft and Intel, which together dominate 80% of the PC market.
