COMPTON : $536,000 Grant to Aid Youth Jobs Program
Compton Unified School District has received a $536,000 federal grant for a program to help youths find jobs.
The Compton School-to-Work program will help prepare high school students, particularly those from low-income families, for jobs after finishing school. Students will be offered work experience and career counseling to help set career goals and prepare for vocational school or college. The district has formed partnerships with local businesses such as Bank of America, Kaiser Permanente and IBM to provide students with jobs and career training.
The program will be offered to 225 students at Dominguez High School, which has the highest concentration of low-income students in the district, said Howard Holt, a district consultant who wrote the grant proposal.
The district was one of two education organizations in the state to receive a grant from the Education and Labor departments. The other grant went to the Stanislaus County Office of Education in Modesto.
