COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : USC : Irish’s Goheen Out With Injury

Notre Dame linebacker Justin Goheen, once considered a candidate for the Butkus Award, is out of Saturday’s USC game because of a shoulder injury, incurred two weekends ago against Florida State.

Guards Jeremy Akers (shoulder) and Mark Zataveski (neck) are out of Saturday’s game. Defensive end Renaldo Wynn (turf toe) and cornerback Tracy Graham (neck) are listed as questionable.

Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz said cornerbacks LaRon Moore and Shawn Wooden were injured in Monday’s practice and their status for USC was also questionable.

Irish senior running back Lee Becton, who scored on a 70-yard run on the second play of the game in Notre Dame’s 31-13 victory over USC last year, ended that season with six consecutive 100-yard games.

But the 113 yards he had against Air Force last week was his first 100-yard game of this season. His off-year is attributed both to a stubborn groin injury and a constantly changing Notre Dame offensive line. If he gains 73 yards against the Trojans, he’ll become Notre Dame’s No. 10 career rusher.

Against USC last year at South Bend, he had 178 yards in 20 carries, his career high.
