NATIONAL FOREST : 2 Roads to Close for Winter Season

To prevent road damage and ensure public safety, two roads in Los Padres National Forest will be closed for the winter, forest service officials said.

Pine Mountain Road, which intersects California 33 about 35 miles north of Ojai, was closed Nov. 23 and will remain closed until the spring.

Cherry Creek Road, which connects with California 33 just south of the Pine Mountain Inn, is scheduled to close Thursday.

That road may reopen between winter storms, however, depending on weather and soil conditions.

Closing the roads has become a necessity, Ojai District Ranger Linda Riddle said.

“After a big snowstorm, we would sometimes have several hundred vehicles trying to travel up and down Pine Mountain Road,” Riddle said. “Between the ice and rocks on the road, the traffic accidents and the confrontations between drivers, it was getting to be a real mess.”

Both roads will remain accessible on foot. For information on Los Padres National Forest winter road closures, call the Ojai Ranger Station at 646-4348.
