Franklin Telecom Corp., a Westlake Village firm whose products include equipment used in Burroughs and Honeywell computer systems, has introduced a new line of data routers, used to link local computer networks.

Franklin’s new routers, called Tempest, are designed for use by small businesses and in remote offices of larger corporations. They are compatible with the Internet network.

Frank Peters, Franklin’s president, said the firm plans to concentrate on the small-business portion of the $1.5-billion router market. “We are not after existing market share. We want to expand the market,” he said.

“Telephone operating companies have significantly reduced the price of their digital transmission lines and services. These circuits are now affordable to all but the smallest of companies.”

The cost of router equipment has prevented many small firms from taking advantage of new digital services, Peters said. He vowed that the new products will be among the lowest-cost systems available.

Founded in 1984, Franklin has shipped more than 60,000 units of communications boards and systems.
