The inmate suspected in the slaying of serial killer Jeffrey L. Dahmer has a long history of mental problems, including a belief that he is the son of God, news reports said Tuesday. Dahmer had believed himself to be the devil, his lawyer has said.

Christopher Scarver, 25, is the chief suspect in Dahmer’s beating death in a prison toilet. The Milwaukee Sentinel reported his mental background.

Dahmer, who confessed to 17 murders that included some cannibalism and sexual assaults, died Monday from multiple skull fractures and brain trauma, the coroner said.

Scarver, convicted of a 1992 execution-style slaying in Milwaukee, was working on the same janitorial detail with Dahmer, 34, and fellow inmate Jesse Anderson, 37, who was also beaten in the attack and remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Scarver is serving a life term and Columbia County Dist. Atty. Mark Bennett said there was no rush to charge him since he is already in custody.
