INTERIORS : Shopping With a Divine Touch at Benefit

Give an interior designer free rein and what do you get? A floor covered in birdseed. Crown molding made out of corrugated cardboard. A river of cracked mirror chips running through a dining room.

These are a few of the imaginative twists found in fantasy rooms and table settings created for Divine Design ‘94, a fund-raising event this weekend at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles.

Some of the furnishings and accessories used in creating such inviting environs as the “Bel Air Retreat of the Vampire Lestat,” “A Sleeping Porch in Montecito,” “Barbara Hutton Trilogy: Part II” and “Medieval Madness” will be sold at a silent auction.

But visitors can also satisfy their home-decorating urges at an upscale flea market, where clothing and home-decor items are priced at wholesale and below.

A 1937 miniature marble fireplace from a Paul Williams house is $7,000. Pillows are $25 to $150.

The fashion and jewelry part of the marketplace--including a one-of-a-kind Christian Lacroix gown and couture pieces from Romeo Gigli, Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Paul Gaultier--are all half-price.

Calvin Klein, Benetton, David Dart and Fred Segal Flair donated enough merchandise to have their own mini-boutiques.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling (310) 358-8000. Admission today is $20; a pass that includes admission today and to events Sunday is $50. The Design Center is at 8687 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles.

Divine Design ’94 benefits DIFFA/Los Angeles and Project Angel Food, a volunteer group that prepares and delivers 4,000 hot meals weekly to men, women and children homebound with AIDS.
