Suspected Suicide Bomber Wounded in Gaza Strip
A Palestinian carrying a bomb in a backpack was wounded in a failed suicide attack Sunday when his explosives only partially exploded near an Israeli checkpoint and troops opened fire, the army said.
The attacker, identified as 26-year-old Mahmoud Sharif of Gaza City, reportedly ignored orders to stop as he approached troops checking papers of Palestinians crossing the Gaza Strip’s northernmost checkpoint into Israel.
Sharif apparently set off the detonator of a bomb he was carrying in his backpack, prompting soldiers to open fire, the army said. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Army sources said the attacker, who had no permit to enter Israel, carried a makeshift bomb built of cans and nails.
