Blalock and Other LPGA Veterans Will Launch Their Own Legends Series

Women’s golf is getting in on the senior market. The Volvo Legends Series for women 45 and over will be announced at a news conference Thursday at Phoenix.

Jane Blalock, who is putting together the series , said she is among 24 players who accepted invitations to join the venture . Others are Sandra Haynie, JoAnne Carner, Kathy Whitworth, Sandra Palmer, Judy Rankin, Carol Mann and Donna Caponi.

Two $150,000 tournaments are scheduled in 1995 and a third is in the works for Orange County, Chicago or Dallas. The two 1995 events will be played in Phoenix, March 27-28, and sometime in the fall in Atlanta.

Blalock envisions six events in 1996 and as many as 12 soon after that.

The events will be played on Mondays and Tuesdays in a pro-am format. Blalock said there is an agreement with Prime Network for delayed TV coverage of the events.

The LPGA is not affiliated with the Volvo Legends Series, but neither is it opposed to the project, Blalock said.
