The Police Department has announced that it will conduct a sobriety checkpoint starting at 7 p.m. Friday on Valley View Street between Orange and Katella avenues.

The checkpoint will operate until 2 a.m. Saturday, said Lt. John Schaefer. He added that Cypress officers will be assisted by members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

In addition to checking adult drivers for possible intoxication, officers will be checking drivers younger than 21 for use of any alcohol.

Schaefer said that state law empowers officers to seize driver’s licenses of anyone younger than 21 who registers a blood-alcohol content above .01%. The intoxication level for adults is .08%

Schaefer said the checkpoint is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s campaign to clamp down on drunk or drugged drivers.
