GLENDALE : Community College Elections in Limbo

Share

The results of Glendale Community College’s recent student body elections are in limbo, awaiting the outcome of a probe into allegations of illegal campaign tactics.

Four candidates for Associated Student Body offices filed a grievance with the college’s judicial review board last week, saying they witnessed a campaign worker for incumbent ASB president Arthur Katchatourians instructing students how to vote on election day.

The candidates said they filed the grievance because college administrators dealt with their written complaints in an “irresponsible manner.”

Results of the two-day election, which concluded Nov. 30, will be withheld until administrators decide what action to take. Paul Schlossman, dean of student activities and supervisor of ASB government meetings and elections, said the judicial panel could nullify the election results if it finds any substance to the allegations.

“As of right now, the votes have not been counted yet,” Schlossman said.

Although ASB officers for the spring semester are usually sworn in before the holiday break--which begins in three weeks--Schlossman said it is unclear whether the dispute will be settled by then.

The grievance mirrors the complaints raised by a group of students who called last week for the disqualification of Katchatourians from the elections.

Katchatourians said the students involved in the alleged unfair electioneering did not work for his campaign and denied any wrongdoing on his part or by others on his behalf.
