Newport Beach Library Earns Grant for Energy-Saving Measures

The Newport Beach Public Library has received a $51,247 grant from Southern California Edison for building energy-conservation measures into the new Central Library that opened in the spring.

The $8.2-million main library, at 1000 Avocado Ave. in Newport Center, has reflective glazing, automatic lighting controls that shut off lights in unoccupied rooms, efficient high-energy light bulbs, variable-speed motors for heating and air conditioning units, and more.

The library is expected to save about $12,000 to $15,000 a year by using the energy-saving fixtures and materials, Library Director LaDonna Kienetz said.

“We are grateful to our architects and to Southern California Edison for helping us maximize the energy efficiency of the building, enabling us to significantly reduce operating costs,” she said.

The library building was designed by San Francisco-based Simon Martin-Vegue Winkelstein, in association with James L. Pirdy in Newport Beach.
