Authorities on Thursday night captured an ex-convict who police said fired at them hours earlier when they tried to stop him for a parole violation, then hijacked a car at gunpoint.

Guadalupe Vincent Hernandez, 29, of Santa Ana was to be booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, carjacking and the parole violation, said Lt. Dan Martini of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Hernandez was tracked down by investigators at a friend’s house in Garden Grove after a daylong search, Martini said.

The incident began about 2 a.m. when Garden Grove police tried to stop Hernandez on an arrest warrant, Martini said.

Hernandez fired shots at police as he dumped his car near the Beach Boulevard entrance to the Garden Grove Freeway, then stole a car from a couple at gunpoint and fled, Martini said.

Sheriff’s deputies spotted the stolen car in Stanton, but Hernandez refused to stop, Martini said.

He left the car and ran from deputies at an apartment complex on Knott Avenue in Anaheim, firing twice as he clambered over a fence. Deputies fired about four shots in return, but Hernandez got away, Martini said.

A search using helicopters and dogs failed to find Hernandez, but investigators later got a tip that he was staying at the home of some friends, Martini said.
