NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Army, Air Force to Thin Their Ranks
The Army and Air Force announced personnel reductions that will cut tens of thousands from their uniformed and civilian ranks over the next two years. The Army will go from 12 to 10 active-duty divisions and cut thousands more positions from the support ranks for a net reduction of about 10% over the next 19 months. Army cuts will fall most heavily on Kansas, Colorado and Texas. An Air Force plan cuts 11,700 civilian positions in the next seven months as the first phase in a reduction of 38,000 civilian positions.
