TOO LATE? Merrill Lynch, the major investment firm getting heat as part of Orange County’s financial debacle, had two free seminars scheduled for next Thursday at its Seal Beach office called “Municipal Bond Market: Year-End Investment and Tax Strategies.” More than a dozen had preregistered to attend. . . . Spokesman Larry Yells said Friday: “In light of all that’s going on, we may decide it’s appropriate to reschedule.” An hour later, the seminars were canceled.

HE’LL BE BUSY: Here’s another event sent into a tailspin by the county crisis: The International Marketing Assn. and Cal State Fullerton had scheduled a luncheon next Wednesday with the topic, “Orange County’s Future: Maximizing the Potential Global Village.” The speaker: County Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez. . . . But the supervisor called them late in the week and said sorry, but he might be a little busy with emergency meetings next week. . . . He’s been replaced by an executive with Beckman Instruments. A luncheon spokesman said the topic may change too: “Obviously we’re scrambling a little right now.”

LOVE HIM TENDER: His passions are Elvis, the West and baseball. So Gary L. Hausdorfer--a 16-year San Juan Capistrano city councilman now stepping down--was touched when his colleagues told him they’re naming a baseball field for him. It will be part of the city’s future sports complex. . . . Hausdorfer called it a great honor: “Elvis, you can only hang on the wall.”

NATURE ONLY: Today is one day that Supervisor Thomas F. Riley briefly can set aside the fund crisis. Though the bankrupt county reportedly had a tough time getting vendors to provide chairs, Riley is to attend the dedication of a wilderness park bearing his name, off Oso Parkway near Coto de Caza. It’s rugged land with six miles of trails for hikers, horse riders and mountain bikers, free admission, and no dogs allowed. . . . Park ranger Ginny McVickar calls it “low-impact recreation”--no frills, just rugged nature.
