Ship holiday gifts ahead of time.
* Take an empty suitcase to pack gifts for the return trip.
* Remember: a direct flight is not always a nonstop flight.
* Dress for duress: Wear flat-soled, lace-up shoes so you can loosen them if your feet swell.
* On the plane, use a rolled-up blanket for lumbar support and a pillow for neck support. If you can, rest your feet on a carry-on bag or a blanket.
* Arrive at the airport at least an hour before departure to allow for congestion and to avoid being bumped.
* Order special airline meals in advance.
* Put luggage tags inside and outside your bags and lock your luggage. If you check bags, use a carry on for a toothbrush, prescription glasses and medications and a change of underwear, anything you must have if your bags go missing.
