‘Bhaji on the Beach’

Warm and charming while sacrificing neither its integrity nor its point of view, this British film, released in the United States earlier this year, covers considerable personal and political territory without overreaching or condescending. Moreover, it never forgets to have fun. The debut film of director and co-writer Gurinder Chadha, it is the seriocomic story of a day trip to the seaside resort of Blackpool by several generations of Indian women living in Birmingham, England. The film’s title comes from an only-in-England snack derived from a traditional Indian dish. The film’s focal characters, each with her own romantic problem, are Ginder (Kim Vithana, center, with Amer Chada Patel, who plays her son, and Shaheen Khan, who plays her pal Simi) and Hashida (Sarita Khajuria) (Cinemax Wednesday at 8 p.m.).
