COUNTYWIDE : Newspaper Group Names New Editor

Share

Albuquerque Tribune Editor Timothy J. Gallagher has been named editor of the Ventura County Star group of newspapers, company officials said Sunday.

Gallagher, 38, will replace John R. Irby, who abruptly resigned late last week citing “philosophical differences” with the company’s management.

Editor of the Tribune since 1987, Gallagher will take control of the newspapers Jan. 1.

Gallagher’s hiring and Irby’s resignation are the latest in a series of management changes in the Ventura County newspaper group, which is owned by Ohio-based Scripps Howard newspapers. Gallagher has been a Scripps journalist for 17 years.

The group’s daily newspapers have undergone several changes since publisher John P. Wilcox arrived last year. Coverage of local news has been shifted to pages deeper inside the main section, the price of home delivery has been increased and, late last month, the Star-Free Press and its editions changed their names to the Star.

The Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks papers have also added Star to their mastheads.
