LONG BEACH : Marina Panel to Weigh Complaints in Survey

Share

In response to increasing vacancies and complaints from boaters docked at the Downtown Marina, the Marina Advisory Commission is considering possible improvements.

Boaters complained in a survey about unfriendly marine patrol officers, lack of parking, disturbances from special events, messy restrooms, vagrants and thefts. Boaters also questioned why the city charges the same rate at the Downtown Marina as it does for the more popular Alamitos Bay Marina.

The Downtown Marina is “just way overpriced and people realize it,” said Paul Breul, vice president of the Long Beach Marina Boat Owners Assn., who compiled the survey results. About 60 of the 1,133 slip holders in the Downtown Marina responded to the survey.

The commission discussed the possibility of lowering prices downtown to make the marina more appealing. More than 500 of the 1,830 slips downtown are vacant.

At least one boat owner said he had no problem with the marina. Charlie Batton, who has rented a slip there for 10 years, said the price and facilities suit him fine. “It could be worse,” he said.

The commission will submit its findings and recommendations to the City Council.
