North : FULLERTON : Police Back Statewide Anti-DUI Event Friday
City police have joined a statewide effort urging motorists to drive with their headlights on all day Friday to draw attention to the dangers of drunk driving.
The state Office of Traffic Safety and the California Coalition Against DUI are sponsoring the Lights On for Life campaign as part of the observance of December as National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month.
Police said that 108 people throughout the state were killed in alcohol-related accidents during the holiday season last year. They estimate that such accidents this year will cost the state more than $6.6 billion in medical, insurance and court costs.
Joining the campaign is part of the Fullerton Police Department’s effort to heighten drunk-driving awareness. A surprise assembly at which Sunny Hills High School students simulated a fatal drunk-driving accident was organized last week by emergency workers, including police and firefighters, to further awareness of the problem.
In addition, an officer has been assigned during the holidays to concentrate on apprehending drunk drivers, city officials said.
