New Law Requires Landscaped Yards

Saying they want to avoid the presence of unsightly yards in the city, members of the Camarillo City Council voted this week to adopt regulations that would give residents a year to landscape their properties or face civil fines.

Voting unanimously Wednesday, the council amended the city’s zoning code by requiring homeowners to landscape any front and side yards that are visible from public sidewalks.

Violators will face fines ranging from $100 to $1,000 depending on the number of citations issued.

Matthew Boden, Camarillo’s director of planning and community development, said there are approximately 11,000 detached single-family homes in the city that would come under the ordinance.

New owners of homes in recently built tracts would have one calendar year from the time their utility services were hooked up to comply with the law. All other homeowners in the city would have a year from the time the amended zoning code becomes effective Feb. 12.

Boden said homeowners violating the proposed ordinance would be issued several warnings before being given a citation and fine.
