Smart & Final Names James Griffin to New Executive Post

Smart & Final Inc. announced the appointment of James Griffin to the newly created position of chief operating officer of its American Foodservice Distributors subsidiary and his promotion to executive vice president from senior vice president of Smart & Final. In his new role, Griffin, 54, will oversee two broad-line food service distribution companies. With his promotion to executive vice president, Griffin continues his responsibility for buying, merchandising, distribution and information systems for Smart & Final stores. Los Angeles-based Smart & Final operates 147 no-membership warehouse grocery stores.

* Scott Bowman, president and chief executive of San Francisco-based I. Magnin department stores, has decided to leave the company after the chain’s operations are phased out early next year. R.H. Macy & Co. recently decided to discontinue its I. Magnin operations. I. Magnin is now liquidating its inventory and will close some time in January. The New York-based Macy and the Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores complete a merger today.

* Larry Elchesen has been promoted to senior vice president of Ingram Micro Inc., a Santa Ana wholesale distributor of microcomputer products. He will remain president of its subsidiary, Ingram Micro Inc. Canada. Elchesen became president and chief operating officer of Ingram Micro Inc. Canada after the merger of Ingram Computer and Micro D in 1989.

* John Feenie has been named president of the Asia Pacific region of Disney Consumer Products, Burbank. Feenie, who is based in Hong Kong, will be responsible for the development and management of the Walt Disney Co. Asia Pacific Ltd.’s subsidiary offices throughout the Asia Pacific region.
