Red Cross Gives Tips for Holiday Safety

Share

The Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross, in conjunction with the National Fire Prevention Assn., has issued a series of safety tips designed to reduce injuries during the holiday season.

The tips include:

* Keep lighted candles away from decorations or other combustible materials. Never display candles in windows or near exits. Keep candles, matches and lighters out of the reach of children. Never use candles to decorate Christmas trees.

* Choose a fresh Christmas tree and place it in a sturdy stand. The tree should be watered daily and kept away from heat sources and exits. Make sure artificial trees are labeled as fire-retardant.

* Make sure decorative electric lights have been approved by a testing laboratory. Do not overload electrical outlets, and unplug all lights before leaving home or going to bed. Never put electric lights on a metal Christmas tree. Lights displayed outside should be labeled for outdoor use.

* If guests are smoking, provide them with large, deep ashtrays. After the party, check under upholstery and in trash cans for smoldering cigarette butts.

* When attending a holiday party, always designate a nondrinking driver. If you are hosting a holiday gathering, be sure nonalcoholic beverages are available.

* Wear a seat belt to prevent injuries in a motor vehicle collision. Everyone in the vehicle should wear a belt.

* Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything combustible.

* Have your chimney inspected by a professional. Do not burn paper or pine boughs.

* Avoid wearing loose clothing when cooking. Do not store items on stove tops.
