A Japanese court ordered a school Tuesday to pay compensation for working a teacher to death.

The Okayama District Court ordered the Shimbi Gakuen school to pay $123,000 to the family of Yoshinomi Tanaka, who died in 1986 at age 44 from a brain hemorrhage.

The court ruled that Tanaka’s heavy workload caused his death. In addition to teaching, Tanaka was acting vice principal.
