MISSION VIEJO : Pushcart Vendors OKd to Sell Food at Mall

Share

Three pushcart food vendors will be allowed by the city to operate at the Mission Viejo Freeway Center for the next four months.

The Planning Commission, recognizing that the hundreds of employees at the new center need a convenient place to eat, approved the temporary arrangement, on condition that the vendors get permission from the shopping mall operator.

At the end of four months, the city will review the arrangement and decide whether to continue allowing the vendors to operate at the center. Commissioner Norman Murray said he’d like to give future center tenants, Jack-in-the-Box and Dairy Queen, a chance to comment on the vendors.

Jerry Green, Ryan Corona and Cindy Atkinson, who run separate sidewalk pushcart food operations, had complained to the City Council on Dec. 12 about being shut down by city code-enforcement officers. The council referred them to the Planning Commission.

All three food vendors said they provided plenty of room on the sidewalk in front of the stores for customers. They added that the food service was appreciated by store employees, who must otherwise drive about two miles to the nearest fast-food restaurant.

The pushcart vendors said that individual corporations have given permission for them to operate in front of their stores.
