The Working Poor

Share

The article by Hugh Price, “The Alienated Poor Are Today’s National Threat” (Commentary, Dec. 12), deserves attention. It makes sense that “people with no prospect of decent jobs will reject society’s institutions.” Why shouldn’t they?

Two other points Price makes need reiteration:

“There’s a glaring disconnect between emerging welfare policies, which insists that the poor work, and Federal Reserve Board policies that proclaim the economy overheated when unemployment falls below 6%.”

What is needed are “assurances that those who work won’t be poor. This means a much higher minimum wage.”

To me this means an increase from $4.25 per hour to at least $6.
